Wellness coliving – fact or fact? Coliving for an elevated lifestyle

People’s relationships with their living spaces have been changing. Our collective awareness around wellness and other mental and physical health-related issues has been sharpening over the last decade. And it has only increased due to the pandemic. First, co-working redefined the style of office work. Now it’s time for coliving and hospitality sectors to reflect the shift away from homeownership and apartment rentals towards the shared economy and a residential model based on membership and focused around wellness. Hence the rise of wellness coliving. It combines the wellness real estate trend with a lifestyle component that elevates your daily wellbeing through design, technology, and community experience.

B-Hive Living is one of the pioneers and a model example of the wellness coliving movement. The following are the primary modern issues the brand addresses in the scope of the wellness coliving trend, and the solutions it offers for a more fulfilled lifestyle of residents.

    Issue: Unhealthy living environment

The living environment we find ourselves in is usually harmful to our health and wellbeing. When B-Hive Living started operation, 1 in 3 rented homes was in fact deemed unfit for human inhabitation in the UK. Hidden costs, absent landlords, inflexible contracts and poorly maintained spaces were all part of a self-servient culture of disregard for the health, wellbeing, and convenience of users. In these hectic and costly times, we are often also forced to compromise on living standards. We have no time or simply forget to take care of our immediate surroundings.

    Solution: Wellness-oriented design

Since people spend more than 90% of their time in the built environment, wellness coliving is a true opportunity to impact the society in a positive way. It supports the holistic health and wellbeing of a growing generation of renters. B-Hive Living constantly improves the wellness-oriented biophilic design of the homes, and gives the Hivers comfortable control over their space by introducing smart technology throughout the premises.

    Issue: Loneliness/burnout

In the times when we had no smartphones or social media, people connected with one another face to face. Socialising and even doing business depended on dinners together, nurturing relationships, and initiating meaningful interactions. Currently we are in a state of  tech-enabled isolation, and  many of us find ourselves feeling lonely. These feelings of loneliness are grounded in science – community is vital to our wellbeing. According to Campaign to End Loneliness, feeling lonely comes with multiple physical and mental health risks. That’s why today millennials are transforming their lives to prioritise wellness. The technology follows, with a platitude of exercise and meditation apps, organic food delivery services, etc. And so follows the wellness real estate market.

    Solution: Community experience

Communal living offers a solution to the loneliness problem. The togetherness and community experience can be life-changing to many. Combined with upscale facilities, both supporting togetherness (recreational green area with a community firepit, kitchens for multiple users, shared living and dining areas) and privacy (en-suite bedrooms and private corners), this model implemented by B-Hive Living provides for affordable yet very comfortable accommodation.

At the Hives, the community experience is designed by dedicated specialists. It includes an event calendar, useful wellness content, and consultations with wellness experts. A dedicated community app facilitates your connection with like-minded Hivers. It encourages passion for mindfulness and fitness, and makes sure people get to know each other, spend time together, and inspire each other with their energy, ultimately elevating their quality of life.

A vibrant healthy group of people at a table

    Issue: Rising urban living costs

With urban sprawl and growing economy, there has been an immense demand for affordable housing in the heart of urban areas. Meanwhile, the supply is constantly shrinking. We are increasingly facing the choice between a longer commute from the suburbs and building up or densification of central building development. The former solution takes away the much valued sense of freedom and flexibility. And the other is hugely cost- and time-consuming. A third choice, less obvious, yet meeting the needs of the modern generation, is innovation involving wellness real estate. The existing real-estate is transformed into affordable but comfortable luxury coliving homes that offer benefits beyond location and savings.

    Solution: Sharing economy

There is a general transition away from ownership by millennials. It is exemplified by the huge success of Uber avoiding car ownership, and Netflix shifting from content ownership to access. The trend is disrupting every industry, and the trillion-dollar industry of residential real estate is proving to be no exception. Offering the flexibility of short- to long-term membership options, wellness coliving pools resources such as community space, gym, laundry, and recreation facilities, along with services and other benefits, to offer a luxury lifestyle at an affordable price. The average resident age proves the elevated urban lifestyle and accommodation can now become reality just as you mature into your thirties.

    cooking together

The rise of the global wellness economy stood at $4.4 trillion in 2020, even amidst the pandemic. According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness real estate (including residential, commercial, and institutional properties such as office, hospitality, mixed-use/multi-family, medical and leisure) that incorporate intentional wellness elements in their design, materials, building, as well as amenities, services and/or programming – ‘has maintained the highest growth rate in the wellness economy, both before and during the pandemic.’

Wherever the economy turns in the upcoming years, it will support the shift towards membership-based wellness real estate. That’s why wellness coliving is on the rise and here to stay. By elevating the lifestyle of resident after resident, it drives social change that’s needed and inevitable. Millennials and Gen-Z will continue prioritising wellness over materialism. They will become increasingly aware of the benefits wellness co-living brings in that context.

Meet your Hivemate: Andrea – Pilates studio owner in Oxford

Get an insider glimpse of our Hive community and their lifestyles. Meet your actual potential Hivemate and let them show you around. Join in on the coliving adventure at one of our Hive Homes. Practice Pilates with Andrea at her Oxford Pilates studio.

Your Hivemate Andrea and the B-Hive Living experience

Hi. I am Andrea. I am from Hungary. I’m a tamed rebel. I left home and moved to the Uk when I was 18 to be free, to be independent, to challenge myself, to build a life, explore life…  I’m a fighter and a survivor.

I’m not gonna lie, the first couple of years in the UK was hell on earth. I wasn’t lucky with the experiences I had at the beginning. Despite the difficult start I worked hard, stayed focused and saved up enough money to go to university. I worked throughout University as a Pilates instructor and when I finished, I ended up with my own business, a Pilates studio in Oxford.

I have travelled quite a bit and since I like sunshine, being by the sea/water and those warm summer evenings I am always on the lookout for winter escape.

As a wellness expert, what do you make of the B-Hive living well concept and its mission to empower residents to lead a more connected and healthy lifestyle?

I do believe that without health we would not be able to reach our full potential. Physical exercise, healthy diet and social connections have been linked to longevity as well as a more fulfilled life. The living well concept at B-Hive supports the tenants in a way that we can not only ‘live’ here but thrive here.

“The living well concept at B-Hive supports the tenants in a way that we can not only ‘live’ here but thrive here.”

    Andrea

How would you describe the experience of B-Hive co-living as opposed to other types of accommodation you previously experienced? How does your B-Hive home and rental experience compare and contrast to other previous letting experiences?

I have lived in many accommodations previously from student hall to shared living with friends as well as living by myself.

I really like the balance B-Hive living can offer. I can have privacy when I want but be social when I need company. Having a nice room with an ensuite bathroom offers the privacy I need while having great social areas in the house such as the fire pit in the garden gives the opportunity to bond with other housemates.

What is your favourite part of your Hive home and why?

The hammock is definitely my favourite feature right now. When the sun is out you’ll find me there. But in the winter I love spending time in the kitchen/dining area. It is the most social part of the house and I like chatting to other Hivers after work.

How has your lifestyle been influenced by living in a Hive coliving community?

I have a much better work life balance now compared to when I lived by myself. We regularly bake cakes together, we have BBQs, social activities, I am now learning to play the guitar and the piano etc. We enjoy skill sharing in our house and we inspire each other which for me makes B-Hive an ideal place to live.

“We enjoy skill sharing in our house and we inspire each other which for me makes B-Hive an ideal place to live.”

    Andrea

What’s the most unexpected thing you found out about yourself or co-living while being there?

As much as I wanted to be ‘independent’ as a teenager I am now realising how much I enjoy the company of others. There was a time when the ideal setup for me was to live by myself. I did it for a while  …until I burnt out as my life became consumed by work.

Now I live in a community where we support each other. I find it nice not to have to come home to an empty flat even if it comes with obvious sacrifices such as sometimes finding someone’s dirty dishes in the sink.   …which seems only a very small price to pay for all the fun that we have together as a house.

Would you recommend B-Hive Living to a friend? Why?

Yes, definitely. In fact, I have recommended it to many of my friends. I think it’s the perfect place for a young professional who likes good quality accommodation as well as social interactions. I get enough privacy as well since I have a lovely room with an ensuite bathroom. When I am feeling tired or have more work I can have some quiet time in my room. However spending time with others is also an option when I am wanting company.

I haven’t been to many monthly social events with the other houses yet (mostly because of timings) but they are also great opportunities for making connections with people as well as taking part in fun activities.

    About Andrea’s Pilates Practice

What sparked your initial enthusiasm for Pilates?

I did a Sports Therapy diploma course many-many years ago in Reading, UK. My tutor was a huge Pilates enthusiast and was running a mat Pilates course the following year. She talked me into doing it. Since then I have done a lot more courses as well as specialised in Pilates for rehabilitation and have even become a mentor for one of the biggest Pilates schools internationally.

What inspired you to start a pilates studio business in Oxford?

In short: I studied at Brookes (Exercise and Health BSc, Neurological Rehabilitation MSc) and I just stayed. I was qualified to teach on the Pilates equipment so I asked the only Pilates Studio with the equipment in Oxford if I could teach there. The owner of the studio was retiring at that time so I ended up taking on the whole business.

What is it about your Pilates training that makes your studio unique?

Other than my Pilates and many other fitness certificates I also have a BSc in Exercise and Health as well as MSc in Neurological Rehabilitation.

There are now a few more equipment studios in and around Oxford. Many of the teachers I trained/mentored. I specialised in Pilates for rehabilitation and I work closely with Physiotherapists and Osteopaths.

Can you tell us your favourite Pilates exercise and why you like doing it?

That’s a tough one. I guess my favourite exercise depends on what my body needs that day.

But it reminds me of a saying/joke in the Pilates community that we sometimes tease each other with. It goes like: ‘I’m just here for the feet in straps.’ Feet in straps is an exercise on the reformer (equipment). It is a great stretch & strength exercise and it is the favourite of many people.

What’s the most expected thing most people often find about themselves after trying pilates?

It is a type of exercise that leaves you feeling energised rather than drained or exhausted. Even after the first session you would usually feel some positive changes in your posture and overall well being.

What do you find most rewarding about your pilates work?

Making people feel good in their bodies.

Do you have any daily rituals to optimise your health and well-being to share with our readers?

I look after my teeth & gums. That also includes not having much sugar in my diet, staying hydrated, avoiding too much coffee etc.

It is more than just about a nice smile or the ability to enjoy chewing my food with a full set of teeth. A lot of cardiovascular and chronic inflammatory diseases start in the mouth. It’s been linked with many conditions from depression to heart attack.

I have come across some pretty awful cases such as a young girl losing all her hair because of a bad tooth. (She did grow her hair back once the tooth problem was dealt with.)

The bottom line is, if there is one daily ritual which you cannot miss in order to maintain overall health of the body is brushing your teeth twice a day (Or as I learnt it back in nursery: ideally 20-30 minutes after every meal.)

Look after your teeth! You’ll do more for your health with that than you might think.

Check out Andrea’s Pilates practice in Oxford and join for a more fulfilling lifestyle.

  • How we pay tribute to nature and community with biophilic mural art

How we pay tribute to nature and community with biophilic mural art

Emerging from the brand values of B-Hive Living, including biophilic design and focus on the community, is the story of the mural on the latest of our Hives in Oxford, UK.

In celebration of creativity and community, we have been collaborating with an eclectic bunch of local artists and craftspeople from the very beginning of the brand’s existence. We fill each of our Hives with personalised decorative items. We upcycle them from old surfing and skate boards, whisky barrels, reclaimed wood and more. They make the spaces more sustainable and unique. Another signature feature of the Hives is a biophilic mural on the garden walls of each of our properties. They are all created by muralist, illustrator, and designer Curtis Hylton.

We felt the outdoor areas of the Hives should be anything but ordinary. We’re also adamant about using nature-inspired street art in a way that induces a sense of awe and connection to the natural environment. Yet, such themes and style are not very common in street art. We were delighted when we came across the works of Curtis Hyton. It’s a match made in heaven for our purpose. Curtis happens to combine the love of nature and street art in a way we found perfect to go with the ethos of our brand.

“The theme of my work has grown to be heavily influenced by nature and our connection to it”

    Curtis Hylton

Street art stands for freedom of creativity. For us, it also conveys purpose, identity, belonging, and pride. Spending time in nature has shown to unequivocally improve our mental wellbeing. Mural art is another strategy we use to create and enhance direct contact with nature within our spaces.

It makes our green spaces more inviting, casual, and relaxing, suiting our aim of encouraging our residents to spend more time outdoors. The importance of that cannot be overstated, since we nowadays spend more than 80% of our time indoors.

On top of all that, the murals turn our properties into recognisable landmarks in the area. They make people stop for a moment of admiration, and provide a source of pride for our Residents and Team.

“It’s refreshing to see graffiti as a global scene growing continuously, as well as becoming an accepted art form. Public street-art projects are great for all generations, they stimulate and inspire communities.”

    Curtis Hylton

This time, at the opening of the first Hive in Oxford, we took a new turn with our design. This was driven by a request from a local community member for local wildlife species to be featured in our murals. We leavagred the launch of our latest property to make this happen. To promote people’s connection to their neighbourhood and in tribute to Curtis’s creative flow, in addition to brightening the space with our signature images of colourful exotic plants and fruit, we decided on the mural celebrating the local wildlife icon – the kingfisher.

    Image: B-Hive Living

We are particularly proud of choosing this design for the location, and of its placement right next to the logo of B-Hive Living. It fitted nicely with our brand values of promoting a positive and healthy lifestyle to our community and its surrounding environment while safeguarding our wildlife heritage for future generations. And surely the gifted hands of Curtis created the perfect canva for that.

“Anything botanical inspires me, nature is beautiful and I just want to paint it everyday! My paintings tend to be a mix of flowers merged with birds and other animals, their wings and bodies etc are intertwined with petals and leaves, like a sort of natural balance.”

    Curtis Hylton

You can have a tour of our selected property if you are interested in moving in. Please enquire about the availability of bedrooms in our coliving Hives here. We are looking forward to meeting you. The design of the garden areas is just one of the carefully selected details that make coliving with B-Hive Living promote a more connected, healthy, and fulfilling life.

  • How to make your home a feel-good haven this spring

How to make your home a feel-good haven this spring

Perhaps you need to hear this today – the way you arrange your home can make you feel good about yourself and give you a greater sense of control. A home that’s a nicer place to live will ultimately make you happier and healthier. And you can make it happen over a weekend, wherever you’re staying. Take it from B-hive Living – a wellness coliving brand that does it for you on a daily basis at our Oxfordshire Hives.

Living well starts at home. After all, that’s where we tend to spend most of our free time, or most of all our time if you’re a remote worker. Whether you live alone or with others, your home is also an important part of your identity. Especially during the pandemic, our homes have become a workplace, school, and gym, and still have to be a place to relax and recover from everyday stress. It doesn’t have to be a challenge. Let’s pull up our sleeves and get you feeling much better in these days by taking control of your space.

    Declutter and make it yours

At B-hive Living we believe that eliminating things that don’t serve a specific purpose or you don’t personally find beautiful and pleasant is a good start. Apply that rule to your space. A neat home works wonders for our mental clarity and overall health, so start with decluttering. If you haven’t used that candle holder or worn that coat in a long time, consider giving them a second life by donating them (try free stuff! Or Freegle). You will likely find the freed space more valuable than the things that have been occupying it. All the items you keep because they are useful or you love them will naturally find their own comfortable place.

And now, you go ahead and occupy the space. Surround yourself with personal items. Frame your favourite picture, throw that blanket you find cosy on the bed. Keep the books you love near your place of rest. Give your home your own personality. It may feel like you’ve just moved in when you’re done. Feels great, doesn’t it?

    Decluttered living room
    Image: B-hive Living

Provide for small pieces of comfort

When making changes to your home, we encourage you to consider how you’ll use your home throughout the day, and how you infuse comfort at every step. Pampering yourself is largely in the small things.

Keep comfy slippers next to your bed, and your favourite magazine at the breakfast station. Having pots of fresh herbs in the kitchen will change the way you experience meals, and remote-controlled lighting will contribute to undisturbed evening relaxation. Replace your old shower head with one with beads that makes showers more pleasant and healthier.

Look around and have fun making yourself feel a tiny bit better with every little change, until you get the feeling of ‘Hygge’ from early morning to when your head hits the pillow.

    Image: B-hive Living

    Balance work and relaxing space

Taking care of your mental hygiene is key to design for wellness living. Do it by making sure you accommodate space for relaxation alongside your designated working space. If your home is small, you can use furniture or large plants to create broken-plan zones to separate where you work, relax, cook and eat. If you love reading, organise yourself a nook just for that. A similar space just for crafts and hobbies might become your favourite spot in your home. Personalise, own, and love it.

    Image: B-hive Living

Make the most of natural light and fresh air

You don’t need to remodel your home to optimise the amount of natural light you get. Try re-arranging the layout of the room instead. Move your desk in front or next to the window. Arrange your sofa to face the windows as well. Not only will you be exposed to more natural light throughout the day, but you’ll also benefit from connecting with the open space outside.

A clever way of bringing more natural light into your home is to install mirrors where the light comes in. It will be more equally balanced throughout your space, filling the room from more than just one source.

Make sure you open the windows frequently to ensure the flow of air through your rooms. Air quality at home is perhaps the most underrated feel-good factor that can keep you healthier and make you feel invigorated any time of the day.

    Image: B-hive Living

    Keep it natural

As humans we are deeply connected to nature. Natural textures, materials, shapes and colours provide for a calm and relaxed state of mind. At B-hive we believe that colour alone has the power to transform a room and create different moods. Seek to create harmony of  the walls, textiles and other items in your home. Aligning the shades to the activity and mood you desire in that space is paramount for comfort and creating a space that feels your own. As a rule of thumb, warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are considered to be stimulating, while cool tones of blue and green tend to be more restful and soothing.

In your journey to wellbeing, also cut down on chemicals in your home. It’s not as hard as it seems, it can cut your living costs, and most importantly: a natural home is a nurturing home. Instead of chemical-heavy detergent and cleaning materials, opt for natural alternatives kinder to your skin, general health, and the environment. If you like to light candles in the evening, go for those made from soy or beeswax rather than paraffin-based alternatives (we like those from Oxford Candlemakers).

    Image: B-hive Living

    Love your greens

Houseplants look beautiful and can improve your health and wellbeing too. They can remove harmful chemicals from the air, absorb noise and reduce dust, lower blood pressure, help concentration, improve memory, promote relaxation and make rooms look cared-for and welcoming. For boosting wellbeing go for some of these: Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily), Nephrolepis (Boston Fern), Phlebodium Fern, Gerbera Daisy, Saint Paulia (African Violets), Ficus Benjamina (Weeping Fig), Sansevieria (Snake Plant), Chlorophytum (Spider Plant) and English Ivy.

Houseplants might easily become your new hobby, bringing a whole new benefit to your lifestyle. Caring for plants has been an increasing fun trend over the pandemic times, and you’ll find lots of influencers sharing their love for home greenery and tips on making it thrive in the social media (follow the Potted Jungle, Little North Plants or the Black Plant Man for a start).

He grew up in a small town just outside Lisbon where he enjoyed a beautiful childhood with lots of freedom to run wild in the outdoors in a close, neat community. When he is not looking after clients, surfing, climbing and skating are his go-to passions. He offers strength and mobility training to the residents of B-Hive Living, adding to the connected, healthy and fulfilling lifestyle they look for in the Hives.

What does living well mean to you?

Living well for me is something very personal and ingrained in my nature. We all have our own definitions. For me it’s a way of living defined by an ongoing search to become healthier and happier. That’s how you get to lead an active and wholesome life. For that, it is crucial to make healthy choices every day – from sleeping well and being conscious and intentional about what you eat, to simple decisions like answering the phone standing up rather than sitting down, or taking the stairs instead of the lift.

“Living well is defined by an ongoing search to become healthier and happier. That’s how you get to lead an active and wholesome life.”

How do you make the most of each day?

By pursuing various moments of mindfulness throughout the day. I seek to focus on my breath and become present in that moment.

Why did you choose the health/fitness coach career?

I was particularly influenced by fitness trainers at my school and their lifestyle. I admired their ability to work mostly outdoors, have their own business and be able to dedicate a proportion of their day to their families, health, and their passions – especially surfing. When playing skate hockey I had a tricky knee operation followed by a long treatment. This made me realise the huge impact of this profession on people’s lives so I decided to become a personal trainer myself in 2018.

What do you love most about your work?

What I love the most about my craft is helping people create a better lifestyle for themselves. Witnessing my clients achieving their goals, shifting their mindset and habits, and ultimately becoming a better version of themselves is a huge source of satisfaction and motivation to do my work even better. Finally, working mainly outdoors is a privilege I am thankful for.

“Witnessing my clients achieving their goals, shifting their mindset and habits, and ultimately becoming a better version of themselves is a huge source of satisfaction.”

Something you can’t go a day without is…

Having time for myself and exercising. I love the sensation of stretching out and feeling the body recovery.

What would be the one meal you could eat for the rest of your life?

This is a tricky question since I am a food lover. But if I had to choose one meal for the rest of my life, it would be grilled fish with spinach spread and vegetables. It’s super yummy and healthy!

Can you talk us through how you work?

Everything starts with a conversion and understanding people’s goals and motivations. Their goals and body type need to be aligned with a specific work methodology. I also seek to propose new habits and make people aware of negative habits that may get in the way of them achieving their desired results. Mobility and strength training are a key focus of mine given their impact on people’s vitality and longevity.

“Mobility and strength training are a key focus of mine given their impact on people’s vitality and longevity.”

Your top three tips on keeping health and wellbeing in check?

    1. Sleep well

    2. Eat well

    3. Boost happiness through a more active lifestyle

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

To support a change in mindset through my work by helping to realise the potential of an active lifestyle and how that influences every aspect of people’s lives. It’s time we realise that we are all connected – that could eradicate many of our world problems.

Fashion is a big part of my life. I have been working for my company since 2010. Because of that, I could travel all over Europe, see many cultures, and feel part of them.

What are your top 5 brands to shop in Bicester Village?

Absolutely Versace! Then Versace, and again Versace, Versace, Versace!

How is the social life? What activities and places would you recommend in the area?

Bicester is famous for Bicester Village, really good for shopping. Then take your Hivemate, and in 15 minutes you can reach Oxford city with lots of restaurants and clubs.

What’s your fondest memory of staying with us?

My fondest memory of my stay in the Hive so far is a special dinner we had all together that made all of us bond and unite!

    Medley – riverside bar

Oxford’s brand new riverside bar Medley with a stunning location is a beautiful spot to watch the world go by. Easily accessible from Oxford on foot or by bike along the Thames, it is seasonally open from May to September. It is placed in the previously disused part of the Medley Manor Farm in Binsey.

Wilding – cafe, restaurant, bar and wine shop

Wilding is a massive and elegant refurbishment of the former Cafe Rouge into a relaxed, sophisticated space which includes a cafe, bar, restaurant and wine shop. On top of that, it features a courtyard garden outside.

The menu includes 50 wines by the glass, with any wine in the shop available at your table. The food menu is also versatile and impressive, catering to everything from a casual afternoon nibs to exquisite dining.

Barefoot – coffee and cake shop

Barefoot now features a new site in North Parade, and already attracts queues of people waiting for their irresistible cakes, cookies, donuts, biscuits and more. Inside, the busy cafe is equally as popular. Barefoot stole the sweet tooth of the nation with its ‘brownie in a box’ concept during the pandemic.

The concept of Barefoot is simple: good cake, good frosting, no additives, preservatives or colouring. If they don’t make it they don’t sell it. And this ethos has proven very attractive.

The cakes on offer change daily and seasonally, new additions continuously brought to the offering, such as the popular cinnamon buns and new donut ranges.

  • Best things about living in Oxford, by B-Hive Living

Best things about living in Oxford, by B-Hive Living

With a third of the population aged under 30, a large number of motor manufacturing, publishing, science and technology-based companies, and an exceptional cultural and entertainment scene, Oxford offers life with real cosmopolitan vibe. Here are our best local finds you will want to enjoy while living in Oxford.

A morning jog with a view

Living in Oxford allows for starting your day on one of the many fitness trails of South Park. Have a break at the hilltop to enjoy the absolutely best view of the city, including the famous ‘dreaming spires’. On another day you might want to catch a hot air balloon flight with Adventure Baloons (April and October).

Another good choice for a morning jog is Port Meadow. It’s one of the largest open spaces in the north of city. With the River Thames flowing through the heart of the meadow, it’s also a perfect place for a picnic bbq or weekend fishing.

If you’re still hungry for practicing sports, Oxford University Park offers multiple possibilities, including a game of quidditch!

    Urban rooftop yoga

With unique views of Oxford’s dreaming spires, the Rooftop Terrace Westgate center is the ultimate destination in the city. It offers an eclectic mix of places to eat, drink and more. You will find high class world cuisines there, as well as some daytime entertainment such as a cinema or escape rooms. Our favourites are the Sunday rooftop yoga sessions and the amazing Sticks’n’Sushi restaurant.

    Coworking and coliving

The quality of your daily life depends on where and who you live with, and how you work. Are you a social animal all about community living and working? Check out the relaxed modern community-centric Dodo Works coworking space and well-being oriented coliving opportunities with B-Hive Living. You will end up spending your days with like-minded professionals from around the world, just as excited about living in Oxford as you are.

Living in Oxford like a local

To experience the fantastic multi-cultural energy East Oxford is known for, Cowley Road is the place to be. It’s a colourful, quirky neighbourhood filled with students, ethnic food and second hand shops. Cowley has also become known for the many stunning murals. They reflect the area’s bold and dynamic spirit through paint.

To quench your thirst for reading, you cannot miss the Blackwell’s book shop. It features three miles of shelving in the shop’s Norrington Room alone. There are now nine branches of Blackwell’s in the city, but the original Broad Street shop is hands down the one to check out.

If you’re a lover of the vintage scene, the Unicorn is Oxford’s quirky staple. It’s an ideal shop for the adventurous and determined rummager, with stacks of frilled petticoats, structured waistcoats, 1950s tea dresses and sequined shirts.

Take advantage of the wonderful atmosphere of the local markets. The oldest Covered Market is compact and colourful, full of aromas of fresh fruit, coffee, and fresh baking. You’ll find everything there, from hats to custom-made cakes, skateboards, tea, shoes and more. The market is the place to discover small, independent businesses.

Bring plenty of shopping bags on your way to the Wolvercote Farmers’ Market. You will be excited to stock up on organic fruit and veg, locally-reared meat, artisan bread and cheese, cakes, chutneys and more.

    Foodie’s lunch

If you love burritos more than anything, you will see eye to eye with Mission Burrito. It was born our of borderline obsession with the burritos of San Francisco. Mario’s is where you go for a truly genuine Italian experience… and where Italians are reminded of their grandmothers’ kitchens. For the possibly the best authentic Chinese-Malasian in the country, visit Zheng.

    Afternoon tea with a theme

Right on top of the world’s oldest museum with terrific views of the picturesque spires of Oxford, afternoon tea is a specialty of the Rooftop Terrace Ashmolean Museum. It’s often themed to tie-in with whatever exhibition is showing. It’s one of the best ways to feel the exceptional atmosphere of living in Oxford.

    Excellent dinner venues

The Giggling Squid Thai Restaurant offers staggeringly good Thai food and absolutely beautiful interior design. For a more local traditional treat, The Perch pub is an excellent choice. As an institution as old as the Oxford University, over at least 800 years it’s been a favourite of some of Britain’s best poets and authors, a frequent haunt of Inspector Morse, and even an influential venue on the British Jazz scene.

    Evening entertainment

If it’s entertainment you’re looking for, then Oxford offers everything from student club nights to stand up comedy, classical concerts, plays and musicals, several cinemas and an abundance of live-music venues. Our personal recommendation would be the Raul’s Cocktail Bar. It is named as one of the Top 50 Bars in the World by The Sunday Times. It also offers cocktail classes!

However you’d like to enjoy living in Oxford, the independent Daily Info newsletter lists everything going on in the city and is a great way to find things to do.

  • Is Bicester a Nice Place to Live? An Honest 2026 Guide from People Who Live Here

Is Bicester a Nice Place to Live? An Honest 2026 Guide from People Who Live Here

Is Bicester a Nice Place to Live? A 2026 Guide to Commuting, Lifestyle & Costs

Yes, for many people, Bicester is one of the best places to live in Oxfordshire if you want more space, easier access to nature, and lower living costs without feeling disconnected from London or Oxford.

It is especially well-suited to professionals commuting a few days a week, people working in Oxfordshire’s science and motorsport sectors, remote workers looking for a calmer pace of life, and anyone who enjoys the balance between convenience and community. Bicester combines fast rail links, strong amenities, countryside access, and a surprisingly international atmosphere for a market town.

That said, Bicester may not be the right fit if you want the intensity of a major city, late-night culture every evening, or entirely car-free living. It is growing quickly, and some areas feel more suburban than historic. But for many residents, that trade-off is exactly what makes it appealing.

At B-Hive Living, we run coliving houses across Oxfordshire and speak to people relocating here every week. This guide answers the questions people most often ask before moving to Bicester in 2026.

You might also find these useful:

Where is Bicester and why are so many people moving there?

Bicester is a fast-growing market town in north Oxfordshire, around:

    • 20 minutes from Oxford

    • Under one hour from London by train

    • Around one hour from Birmingham

    • Close to Milton Keynes, Banbury, and the Cotswolds

Its location is one of the main reasons demand has grown so quickly over the last few years. Many residents now split their week between remote work and commuting into London or Oxford.

The town has also seen major investment and expansion, including:

    • Continued development around Bicester Village station

    • New residential neighbourhoods and infrastructure

    • Growth in nearby science, health tech, and motorsport industries

    • Ongoing investment connected to East West Rail and Oxfordshire transport upgrades

Bicester increasingly appeals to people who want access to opportunity without the pace or cost of London.

What is the commute like from Bicester?

Commuting is one of Bicester’s strongest advantages.

    The town has two stations:

    Typical journey times:

    • London Marylebone: around 50 minutes

    • Oxford: around 15–20 minutes

    • Birmingham: around 1 hour

For drivers, the M40 provides easy access towards London and Birmingham, while the A34 connects conveniently to Oxford and the south.

In 2026, Bicester continues to benefit from wider rail and infrastructure improvements happening across Oxfordshire, reinforcing its role as a strategic commuter hub rather than simply a small market town.

Is Bicester cheaper than London or Oxford?

    Yes — significantly.

Compared with London, renting and buying property in Bicester remains far more affordable, while still offering strong transport links and good amenities.

This is one reason Bicester has become popular with:

    • Young professionals

    • Couples relocating from London

    • International workers

    • People working in Oxfordshire’s science and technology sectors

Many residents find they can afford:

    • More space

    • Newer housing

    • Outdoor areas

    • Better work-life balance

…without sacrificing access to major cities.

If you are relocating for work or looking for a flexible setup, shared living is also increasingly popular in the area. You can explore our guide to Rooms to Rent in Bicester for Professionals.

What is the lifestyle actually like in Bicester?

Bicester feels calmer than a city, but more connected and international than many towns of a similar size.

    You will find:

    • Independent cafés and restaurants

    • A walkable town centre

    • Green spaces and cycling routes

    • Luxury shopping at Bicester Village

    • Easy countryside access

    • A growing professional community

The atmosphere is often described as a balance between “slow living” and convenience.

One of the nicest parts of living here is that daily life tends to feel easier. Shorter commutes, less congestion, and proximity to nature all make a noticeable difference to quality of life.

For many people moving from London, Bicester offers more breathing room without feeling isolated.
